Hi everyone, I hope you’ve had a great summer!
I wanted to let you know about Athens Community Music School’s group guitar class offering this Fall:
For this year’s class I’ve decided to try something a little different: Instead of offering eight 50-minute classes that gradually introduce new concepts each week, class will now meet for six 80-minute classes. Each class will focus on specific guitar techniques and related songs so you can start incorporating the concepts into your playing right away.
The extended class time will be used for group playing and individual instruction. I’m calling it “Six String Savvy.” You can read the complete description below. Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6:10-7:30pm beginning September 18.
I’ve linked to ACMS’s Fall Schedule and Registration Form below. If you have any questions please contact me, and feel free to pass along this email to anyone else that might be interested.
Thanks - stay cool!
John Horne
Six-String Savvy
Instructor: John Horne
Designed for beginning to intermediate level guitarists, this course covers the fundamentals of guitar playing with an emphasis on rhythm playing and vocal accompaniment. Students will use familiar songs by artists such as The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Jimmy Buffet and others as a platform for mastering common chords, learning standard strumming and fingerpicking patterns, and exploring common musical styles and song forms. Additionally, several tips and tricks commonly used by professional guitarists will be revealed including a simple system for remembering every major and minor chord on the fingerboard. Six 80-minute classes allow plenty of time for group playing and individualized instruction.
Open to sophomores in high school through adults.
Friends and Neighbors:
This week I have two dates with The Remonko/Bastin Jazztet!
The Jazztet features trumpeter/percussionist Ernie Bastin and drummer Guy Remonko (of Los Viejos fame) with bassist Terry Douds and guitarist John Horne (that’s me) providing harmonic support. We play a wide variety of styles including blues, bebop, and latin grooves by composers such as Wes Montgomery, Wynton Marsalis, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. I think we’ve struck a nice balance that both casual listeners and jazz aficionados will appreciate. I hope you can come and listen!

Update June 13, 2007
Here are a few photos from the library gig. The APL turned out to be a really nice venue, and I think we all had a really wonderful time! In the last two photos are Azusa and Polly, two of my guitar students.

This Thursday evening, I’ll be unleashing my inner shredder on Athens with “Chaos Theory” a concerto for electric guitar and wind symphony with the Ohio University Symphonic Band.
Chaos Theory fuses “progressive/hard rock intensity with classical sophistication, blurring the line between something precise and mathematical and something primal and visceral.”
The composer, James Bonney, is a Senior Composer/Sound Designer for Midway Games. He has recently finished work Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, and is currently creating music and effects for the forthcoming game John Woo’s Stranglehold.
You can listen to a preview of Chaos Theory at the composer’s website: http://www.jimbonney.com/chaos_theory.php
See you there!

Friends and Neighbors:
I’ll be offering Adult Group Guitar Class at Athens Community Music School again this Fall. If you have ever wanted to play the guitar or just need to brush up on your existing skills this is a great opportunity to do it. Classes will focus on basic guitar techniques and vocabulary with the goal of getting students playing a selection of well-known songs. Classes will begin on Tuesday September 19 at 7:10pm.
In addition to guitar classes, ACMS is also now offering group classes in mandolin, banjo and bass. All classes have great instructors and share a common repertoire that will allow students to get together and play songs together at scheduled after-class jam sessions!
Finally, if you have children and are looking for musical experiences for them to participate in, there are Athens Children’s Chorus and KidSing! Taught by Melanie Horne, children in ACC and KidSing learn to sing and harmonize using a variety of fun songs and musical games, and I know they have a great time doing it!
If you know of anyone who might be interested in the classes feel free to pass the information along…
