The Jazztet performs at The Front Room on the second Tuesday of every month and welcomes special musical guests at each performance. Coming up on Tuesday January 8 we will be joined by woodwind virtuoso Kristopher Keith.
For over a decade, Kris has made a name for himself in the local Columbus, Ohio music scene. His reputation for being a strong woodwind doubler and his ability to perform musical styles from jazz to classical, from Cuban to Brazilian, from rock to funk, etc. has kept him in high demand as a sideman and session player. It should be a fun night, don’t miss it!

When is Someday?
It’s when my CD will be released.
I’ve been trying to catch a Pete Huttlinger show for about three years now, but every time he’s in town I’ve had a gig. This past weekend Pete played 2 free performances at Fur Peace Ranch’s annual Holiday Faire where in addition to finally having a chance to hear him play in person, he invited me to sit in with him!
We played “Blue Monk”, “Blue Bossa”, “Autumn Leaves”, and “Silent Night”. Pete was very gracious and despite his overwhelming technical abilities he was very supportive easy to play with. Thanks Pete, it was an inspirational afternoon!
This Winter I will once again be offering group classes at Athens Community Music School. For this year’s classes I’ve decided to try something a little different: Instead of offering eight 50-minute classes that gradually introduce new concepts each week, class will now meet for six 80-minute classes. Each class will focus on specific guitar techniques and related songs so you can start incorporating the concepts into your playing right away.
The extended class time will be used for group playing and some individual instruction. I’m calling it “Six String Savvy.” You can read the complete description below. Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6:10-7:30pm beginning January 15th.
I’ve linked to ACMS’s Winter Schedule and Registration Forms below. If you have any questions please contact me, and feel free to pass along this email to anyone else that might be interested.
Six-String Savvy
Instructor: John Horne
Designed for beginning to intermediate level guitarists, this course covers the fundamentals of guitar playing with an emphasis on rhythm playing and vocal accompaniment. Students will use familiar songs by artists such as The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Jimmy Buffet and others as a platform for mastering common chords, learning standard strumming and fingerpicking patterns, and exploring common musical styles and song forms. Additionally, several tips and tricks commonly used by professional guitarists will be revealed including a simple system for remembering every major and minor chord on the fingerboard. Six 80-minute classes allow plenty of time for group playing and individualized instruction.
Open to sophomores in high school through adults.
