Hi everyone, I hope you’ve had a great summer!
I wanted to let you know about Athens Community Music School’s group guitar class offering this Fall:
For this year’s class I’ve decided to try something a little different: Instead of offering eight 50-minute classes that gradually introduce new concepts each week, class will now meet for six 80-minute classes. Each class will focus on specific guitar techniques and related songs so you can start incorporating the concepts into your playing right away.
The extended class time will be used for group playing and individual instruction. I’m calling it “Six String Savvy.” You can read the complete description below. Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6:10-7:30pm beginning September 18.
I’ve linked to ACMS’s Fall Schedule and Registration Form below. If you have any questions please contact me, and feel free to pass along this email to anyone else that might be interested.
Thanks - stay cool!
John Horne
Six-String Savvy
Instructor: John Horne
Designed for beginning to intermediate level guitarists, this course covers the fundamentals of guitar playing with an emphasis on rhythm playing and vocal accompaniment. Students will use familiar songs by artists such as The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Jimmy Buffet and others as a platform for mastering common chords, learning standard strumming and fingerpicking patterns, and exploring common musical styles and song forms. Additionally, several tips and tricks commonly used by professional guitarists will be revealed including a simple system for remembering every major and minor chord on the fingerboard. Six 80-minute classes allow plenty of time for group playing and individualized instruction.
Open to sophomores in high school through adults.
Erdem Helacioglu’s Altered Realities
I’d love to know how he managed to get those sounds!
Affective Key Characteristics
So F minor really IS the saddest key!
Xotic Effects Pedals
These sound fantastic. Certainly the best online demos I’ve ever seen for guitar effects.
Ultimate Canon Rock
I’m not really into the Canon Rock thing but this video is really inspiring!
Jerry Seinfeld’s Productivity Secret
Kinda like practicing, huh?
A Symphony for Space Invaders
Weird, but cool!
Berklee Guitar Department Course Syllabi
A great resource for guitar students prepping for college and their teachers.
I just got my Ibanez AF120 archtop back form Gene Imbody’s United Lutherie in Jacksonville, Ohio. It only had a bad volume pot, but since the electronics are only accessible from the f-holes I decided not to tear into it myself. I know it wasn’t a big job, but I have to say how pleased I was with Gene’s professional and friendly demeanor, reasonable price, and quick turn-around time.
If you have any guitars or amps lying around in need of repair I’d highly recommend giving him a call. Also, check out the shop’s myspace page and photos where you can get a good feel for the shop and some of the work he’s done.
Be sure to tell ‘em John sent you.
