Friends and neighbors:

This Thursday evening, I’ll be unleashing my inner shredder on Athens with “Chaos Theory” a concerto for electric guitar and wind symphony with the Ohio University Symphonic Band.

Chaos Theory fuses “progressive/hard rock intensity with classical sophistication, blurring the line between something precise and mathematical and something primal and visceral.”

The composer, James Bonney, is a Senior Composer/Sound Designer for Midway Games. He has recently finished work Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, and is currently creating music and effects for the forthcoming game John Woo’s Stranglehold.

You can listen to a preview of Chaos Theory at the composer’s website: http://www.jimbonney.com/chaos_theory.php

See you there!
John

This afternoon I held my second-ever studio recital at the Front Room Campus Coffeehouse in OU’s shiny new Baker Center. I love the idea of the coffeehouse environment, but the performance space at Donkey Coffee & Espresso (where my last recital was held) is just too small to accommodate 20-plus students and their families. In addition to being a bigger room, the Front Room also has a lot of natural light, which gives it a nice open feeling especially on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The house sound man Tim Eppley was extremely helpful and understood the needs of the performers. Overall, I think it was a perfect location for the type of recital I like to present, and I may well explore setting up a series of recital dates, say once a quarter, at the Front Room.

Yesterday I attended the juries of my guitar students at The University of Rio Grande and sat in on the juries of several other students as well. Although I was impressed with most the performances I heard, I have some real issues with the way some of the students chose to present themselves. As an associate instructor, it’s not really my place to mandate any type of jury etiquette, but I saw some really surprising behavior. Below are some quick notes I made to share with my students so they can be well-organized and prepared going into their next jury.
